Grafarvogur loop from Árbæjarlaug
This route is an accessible run starting at Árbæjarlaug and following the walking and cycling path network of the Grafarvogur district in Reykjavík. The route follows a continuous network of paved paths into and along Grafarvogur inlet, where the path passes below Grafarvogskirkja church, which stands high above the inlet. At the head of the inlet there are extensive mudflats where the Grafarlækur stream reaches the sea, with abundant and varied birdlife, especially wading birds at low tide. Along the inlet there are wide views over the sounds and to Esja, and in clear weather to Snæfellsjökull. The route is about 12 km with little elevation, around 150 metres, and is well suited to training runs. There are footbridges and underpasses beneath the main roads in many places, making the route safe and continuous. On the way back the route runs up Elliðaárdalur along Árleið, a popular path beside the Elliðaár rivers, back to Árbæjarlaug. The paths are shared by pedestrians and cyclists, so take care and yield to cycle traffic. Parking and swimming facilities are at Árbæjarlaug at the start.
