Vífilsstaðavatn and Vífilsstaðahlíð

This route is a varied trail run around Vífilsstaðavatn and Vífilsstaðahlíð in Garðabær, one of the town's most varied outdoor areas. The route starts at the parking area by Vífilsstaðavatn, a lake protected since 2007 and known for its rich bird and animal life. First you run a loop along the lake on easy paths, with wide views over the water and surroundings, and then head up into Vífilsstaðahlíð, a wooded slope near the power line. The surface is mostly compacted soil paths and good gravel paths that run well. From the slope there are good views over the area and towards the mountains. The route is an approximately 11 km loop with around 150 metres of ascent, combining the accessible setting of the lake with the greater challenge of the slope. Vífilsstaðahlíð is sheltered and green, making it ideal in windy weather. The route can be linked to longer loops, for example through Urriðakotshraun, Maríuhellar and on to Búrfellsgjá. Garðabær has built good facilities here, with parking, benches, information signs and maps at the access points. On summer days there is some traffic on the paths, both walkers and cyclists, so take care. As the area is partly a nature reserve, treat the environment with care; dogs are prohibited in the reserve during the nesting season.
