Ásfjall and Ástjörn
The walk goes along Ástjörn and up to Ásfjall. Although the mountain is not particularly high, it is one of the best viewpoints in the capital area. From there, you can enjoy a clear view over the city, out to Faxaflói Bay, and the nearby and distant mountains and hills. The car is parked near Ásvallalaug or at the Haukar sports grounds. From there, the walk follows the road with Ástjörn on the left-hand side. You leave the paved path and follow a well-trodden trail, which in summer is surrounded by lupine. Despite this, the path is clear and easy to walk. At the top of the mountain, there is a viewing scope that is fun to explore, as the view is spectacular. There is also a large square cairn, Ásfjallsvarða. It was originally built by sailors as a landmark but was later rebuilt by British soldiers during World War II. The walk continues along the path on the mountain and then down past the residential area until you return to the parking lot. Ástjörn is a protected area where species such as the great crested grebe nest. All traffic within the protected area is prohibited from May 1 to July 15. However, the paved path followed on this route is open year-round. Ástjörn is a unique natural phenomenon characterized by rich plant and animal life.
