Laugardalur

The walking route begins at Laugardalslaug, the largest outdoor swimming pool in Iceland. From there, the path runs alongside Laugardalsvöllur, Iceland’s national stadium, where both national football matches and other major events take place. The route continues past the stadium and turns onto Þvottalaugavegur, where a wide and well-lit walking path begins. To the left, Valbjarnarvöllur and the Laugardalur tennis courts come into view. The path continues past the Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo and leads to the Reykjavík Botanic Garden. There, visitors can enjoy tranquility, birdsong, and educational displays in a green oasis within the city. Within the garden stands the artwork Fyssa by Rúrí, symbolizing the power and movement of nature. Continuing through the garden, one reaches the historic Washing Pools (Þvottalaugarnar), which are protected relics of the women’s communal washing site used from the 18th to the 20th century. There you will also find the sculpture The Washerwoman (Þvottakonan) by Ásmundur Sveinsson, honoring the women’s labor and the area's history. Finally, the path passes by the Laugardalur campsite before turning left onto Sundlaugarvegur, returning to Laugardalslaug.
