Hobbitastígur and Vífilsstaðahlíð
This popular trail run crosses Vífilsstaðahlíð in Garðabær, one of the town's most varied outdoor areas. The route starts at the end of Vífilsstaðahlíð. From there it leads to Maríuhellar and then onto the so-called Hobbitastígur, well known to local runners, and onto the wooded slope near the power line. The surface is mostly compacted soil paths and good gravel paths, as is common in this area, and runs well. The route is an approximately 8 km loop with moderate elevation gain, around 95 metres in total. Vífilsstaðahlíð is sheltered and green, making it ideal in windy weather. The route can be linked to longer loops, for example through Urriðakotshraun and on to Búrfellsgjá. Garðabær has built good facilities here, with parking, benches, information signs and maps at the access points. On summer days there is some traffic on the paths, both walkers and cyclists, so take care. As the area is partly a nature reserve, treat the environment with care; dogs are prohibited in the reserve during the nesting season.
