The little Ríkishringur in Heiðmörk
This route is a short, easy version of the Ríkishringur, one of the best-known trail runs in the greater Reykjavík area, and is often called the little Ríkishringur. It runs through the heart of the Heiðmörk nature reserve, managed by the Reykjavík Forestry Society, and suits beginners in trail running or those wanting a shorter session. The route starts and ends at the parking area by Helluvatn and uses part of the area's marked sub-loops. The surface is soft forest and gravel paths that run well. Heiðmörk is green and sheltered, making it ideal in windy weather. The route is about 6 km with little elevation, around 65 metres, and is comfortable and accessible. The part that belongs to the marked sub-loops is well waymarked, but it is good to study a map of Heiðmörk before a first attempt or to go with someone who knows the area. On summer days expect considerable traffic on the paths, both walkers and cyclists, so runners and cyclists should take mutual care. There is parking at Helluvatn. The area is a nature reserve, so treat the environment with care. Those wanting a longer route can choose the full Ríkishringur, which is about 12 km.
