Vífilstaðavatn
A well-maintained 2.6 km trail surrounds Vífilsstaðavatn, taking approximately 35 minutes to walk and 15 minutes to jog. Along the path, outdoor benches provide perfect spots to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings and diverse birdlife. Educational signs offer information about the lake's ecosystem, birds, and vegetation. The old pier on the western shore was renovated a few years ago to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. The lake's surroundings are ideal for outdoor activities year-round, with trails leading to Gunnhildur cairn on Vífilsstaðahlíð, offering great views and an orientation dial to identify landmarks. Another trail leads from the lake to Grunnavatnaskarð. Vífilsstaðavatn and its surrounding area were designated as a protected nature reserve in 2007, with the Great Crested Grebe being its most notable feature. Efforts to install nesting platforms in spring have led to a steady increase in the bird population. Dogs are prohibited in the reserve during the nesting season, from April 15 to August 15, and fishing permits are available from April 1 to September 15. Vífilsstaðavatn is located in Heiðmörk, which is managed by the Reykjavík Forestry Association, a non-profit organization. More information, maps, and additional trails can be found at heidmork.is.
