Heiðmörk
Heiðmörk is the largest and one of the most popular outdoor recreational areas in the capital region. Every year, over half a million visitors come to Heiðmörk to enjoy its diverse outdoor activities and natural beauty. There is something for everyone, whether they prefer exploring the area on horseback, by bicycle, or on foot. Over the years, numerous hiking and riding trails have been established throughout the area, and excellent facilities have been developed for families and others looking to enjoy a day in the forest. Heiðmörk covers approximately 3,000 hectares, with forested areas making up nearly one-third of the land. In addition, the area features fascinating geological formations, wetlands, and heathland. The local wildlife is also remarkably diverse, with birdlife being particularly prominent. History and culture enthusiasts will also find plenty of interest in Heiðmörk, as the area contains numerous archaeological remains, dating from the earliest settlements in Iceland to the present day. Heiðmörk is a water conservation area, and visitors are kindly asked to exercise caution while exploring the reserve. Heiðmörk is managed by the Reykjavík Forestry Association, a non-profit organization. More information can be found at heidmork.is.
